Positive Value Chain
Water
Water conservation and reuse is the first step in this ambition. We are focused on improving operational and agricultural water-use efficiency, local water replenishment in high water-risk areas, public education, advocacy for smart water policies and regulations, and adoption of best practices with key partners in the community.
Operational water efficiency
In Pakistan, we have implemented a multiyear strategy to reduce our freshwater footprint. We have reduced water usage by 68% vs. 2015 (our baseline year) through water recovery systems and optimization techniques. This is part of PepsiCo’s commitment to comply with the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard and both our Sundar and Multan Snacks Plants are the first sites in PepsiCo to be AWS Step 5 compliant.
An example of this strategy is innovation in low-water processing, such as the conversion of water nozzles used in potato slicing to more efficient “Splash Cones.” We have also made investments in water recycling technologies such as effluent treatment plant recycle and reuse systems which allow us to treat and reuse water in our manufacturing process, hence eliminating water waste. We are also globally the first PepsiCo market to introduce a potato peel water recovery system.
Did you know? In the Africa, Middle East and South Asia region, PepsiCo Pakistan is the lowest water consumption business unit in snacks manufacturing.
Water replenishment
We recognize that watershed health and reusing water is critical to the well-being of our communities and for the continuity of our business.
Our replenishment journey kicked off in 2020. Through our partnership with WWF – Pakistan we have managed to scale up our projects and replenished +250 Million Liters of water in 2022 through various initiatives such as +100 rainwater harvest systems, 15 ablution water reuse mechanisms, 13x recharge wells, +10,000 tree plantations, Laser Land Leveling on +350 acres of farmland, +2 Kms of Water Course linings and installation of 3 floating wetlands in Lahore and Multan watersheds. We have also proudly achieved 100% water replenishment in our operations in the Multan and Sundar watersheds.
WWF partnership
We have partnered with World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF - Pakistan) to install floating treatment wetlands at Manak village, in Lahore district. This innovative intervention places 150 floating mats on pond surfaces. These floating mats hold 2,100 plants with pollutant-eating bacteria in their roots to naturally treat wastewater and support the broader ecosystem. Floating treatment wetlands provide a habitat for wildlife, and with the wetlands’ improved functionality, water quality in connected ponds improves, creating a native plant habitat and a nesting ground for birds.
On World Water Day 2023, we also launched a unique Water Stewardship Model Community that is being set up in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature — Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan). The Centre for Water Informatics and Technology (WIT) at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) will provide technical expertise for the project while Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) will create policy briefs based on the project learnings to facilitate policymakers.
Alliance for Water Stewardship Standard
We are fully adopting the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standard in Pakistan.
Our Snacks plant in the high water-risk site of Sundar was one of our first manufacturing facilities to pilot the AWS Standard and among the PepsiCo Global 4 pilot sites for AWS. Since then, we have fully adopted it at both of our Snacks plants in line with our overall commitment to water stewardship.
